Convening Community Engagement

All of AIO’s projects and programs are stakeholder driven. Community-driven initiatives are much more likely to be successful and sustainable, guarantee community buy-in, and fulfill the needs of the community. Working with an international group of systems science practitioners AIO helped to develop the Indigenous Leaders Interactive System (ILIS)–a facilitation process that helps groups address the underlying causes of complex and profound 21st century challenges. Before European contact, Native American tribes employed democratic processes, social structures and protocols that were highly effective in consensus oriented decision-making. In an effort to recapture those traditions within a contemporary context, AIO developed ILIS to protect the authenticity of participants’ contributions and leverage the group’s collective wisdom to focus energy and resources, not on symptomatic problems, but instead focusing on the root causes; thus building systemic change.

AIO and the co-conveners of Think Indigeneity seek to develop “medicine” pathways to address challenges and take advantage of opportunities that will improve the well-being of Indigenous communities. By engaging visionary leaders in focused and structured dialogue, we can identify a shared vision that meets the changing needs of Native Americans and Indigenous peoples worldwide.

AIO’s Think Indigeneity Co-Conveners: Chickasaw Nation Cultural Center, Comanche Nation College, Muskogee Nation Department of Health, Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe, Native American Youth and Family Center in Portland, and Sinte Gleska College.

AIO has facilitated dialogue for many varied groups, including the United Houma Nation, Equality NM, Santa Fe Railyard: Creating an Urban Forest, National Urban Indian Families Coalition.
